A cougar is an older woman, usually in her forties or fifties, who is confident, independent and openly attracted to younger men. The word gets used as a joke, a compliment and occasionally an insult, but the women who embrace it tend to wear it with pride.
Where the word came from
Nobody agrees exactly where it started. The popular story is that it began as slang in Canada in the late 1990s, describing older women who went "on the prowl" in bars. It went mainstream in the 2000s through dating sites, magazine features and TV comedy, and it has stuck ever since. These days most people know what you mean straight away.
What makes a cougar a cougar?
There's no official definition, but most people would recognise these traits:
- Age. Usually forty and over. A woman in her sixties or seventies who likes younger men is often called a "puma" or simply a GILF.
- Confidence. She knows who she is and doesn't wait for permission.
- Independence. Often divorced or single, financially comfortable and not looking to be looked after.
- Directness. She'll make the first move and tell you what she wants.
- A preference for younger men. Not exclusively, but enough to be noticeable.
Why the cougar fantasy is so popular
The older woman and younger man fantasy has been around far longer than the word cougar. Novels, films and songs have been built on it for decades. A few reasons it endures:
Experience
An older woman has had time to work out what she enjoys and how to ask for it. For a younger man that can be exciting rather than intimidating: she knows the way, and she's happy to show you.
Role reversal
Traditionally the older, richer, more confident partner was the man. Flip that round and it changes the dynamic completely. Plenty of men enjoy not being the one who has to be in charge.
Honesty
Cougars have usually been through long relationships and come out the other side. They're less interested in games and more interested in having a good time. That honesty is attractive at any age.
The forbidden edge
Whether it's a friend's mum, a teacher you had a crush on at college or the woman at the end of the street, lots of men have a story about an older woman they couldn't stop thinking about. The fantasy lets you play that out.
Cougars, MILFs and GILFs: what's the difference?
The terms overlap, but roughly:
- MILF describes an attractive woman, often in her thirties or forties, usually with a family. She may or may not be chasing younger men.
- Cougar is about attitude as much as age: an older woman who actively goes after younger men.
- GILF is a much older woman, typically in her sixties or beyond, who is still very much interested in sex.
We have lines for all three, but if you want the confidence and directness that makes a cougar a cougar, the Older Ladies line is where to start.
Talking to a cougar on the phone
The phone suits the cougar dynamic perfectly. She does a lot of the talking, she sets the pace, and you can relax and enjoy it. You don't have to be smooth or clever. Be honest about what you like, answer her questions and let her lead. If you'd like some pointers first, read our first call guide.
